Barry Bloye / Front-end Developer
I love...
- Learning new things. You can never know enough stuff, in my opinion. If you can put it in to practice, that's also a bonus.
- Toys, technology and shiny things. I've taught myself to keep the screwdrivers away, though.
- Music. I've played guitar since I was eleven, studied Music Technology for five years, and have spent the last three years playing bass in the band, Left Hand Red.
- Brighton and Sussex. I've lived in the area since I was only four years old, and even three years in Cambridge couldn't prise me away. I love being right in between the sea and the South Downs, and there's just something very special about Brighton.
- A nice cup of tea. Biscuits also make a good companion.
- My wife. She makes me smile. A lot.
I hate...
There are a lot of things that annoy me, but nothing I *really* hate. As a good friend once said, "Hate is murder!"
I have always had a passion for finding out how things work. Ever since I first took a screwdriver to one of my toys just to find out what was inside, it’s irked me to see something doing something cool but not know how it did it.
Although I’ve been using the Internet since my family bought our first Pentium PC back in 1995, my first experience of web development didn’t come until 2001 while I was at University studying Audio & Music Technology.
Curiosity finally led me to dig around and find out how the Web ‘worked’. I began with a simple bit of WYSIWYG editing that led on to learning a few bits of basic HTML. Before long, I’d hand-coded a website for my band.
Forward to 2003. I was only two months in to my first proper, post-Uni job, when a former-colleague asked me “You’re in to computers, right?”, and mentioned a new ‘E-marketing’ job that my new employers were recruiting for. Two months later, I was working on websites for a major publishing company.
Now I find myself at NixonMcInnes as Front-end coder. This means that I am responsible for delivering the Designer’s creative vision, the Experience Designer’s ideas and the behind-the-scenes magic to the end user in one tidy, usable, accessible package.
As a perfectionist and all-round pedant, my job suits me down to the ground. I like to think that I have a real eye for detail, and to me, anything that’s not as good as it could be is simply not good enough. Also, when I know I’ve helped to make things easier and more enjoyable for others, it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.
